Byte is an AI companion that lives on your Windows desktop. It sees what you're working on, unless blindfold (private) mode is on, and answers typed or spoken questions through OpenRouter. It can also find and open things on your PC, fix the text you are writing, start your games and remind you about things. The default character is Byte, a small mint robot; you can swap in your own 3D model or picture.
See it working: the [user guide](docs/GUIDE.md) with screenshots, and the [desktop test report](docs/TEST_REPORT.md).
Byte is an Electron app in [app/](app/). It follows Wallpaper Engine's model: a small host process owns the tray, rules and AI, while Byte and its chat panel draw in separate sandboxed processes. See [app/README.md](app/README.md) for install, architecture, voice, privacy and development.
cd appnpm installnpm startnpm install installs the dependencies (once).npm start runs Byte from source.npm run dist builds Byte.exe and the per-user installer in app/dist.npm run dist:linux (on Linux) builds the AppImage in app/dist. See [Linux](app/README.md#linux) for what differs there.| Path | What's there |
